SAP customers ready to adopt comprehensive compliance platforms are pleasantly surprised at the
depth of functionality relative to some standalone EH&S applications. However, the high degree of modular depth
and interdependencies on other SAP ERP modules, such as Materials Management (MM), Plant Maintenance (PM),
and Sales and Distribution (SD), requires a specialized set of deployment skills and resources to help connect the
dots.
SAP is actively working to broaden the services ecosystem to help fill this void. In the interim, Linx/AS provides
a viable option, offering a unique blend of PLM, environmental compliance, and SAP process knowledge. In
addition to partnering with Atrion to provide support for REACH and other product stewardship initiatives, it has
also developed a product called WorkSafe, which is a series of role-based SAP portals and supporting workflows
to act as the front end of the EH&S module for simplification of data entry and integration points with other SAP
modules. Given the myriad environmental compliance initiatives with which SAP customers across all industries
are tasked, perhaps it's time for SAP to consider an industry value network (IVN) for environmental compliance.
On July 1, 2006, electronics brand owners and distributors selling into the European Union became responsible for minimizing six hazardous substances from products. Six months later, few OEMs are compliant. Through best practices and technology assistance, however, compliance and competitive advantage can result.
The stringent requirements being imposed on ISVs that want to join the Industry Value Network (IVN) for Chemicals shows that SAP has thought pragmatically about how to get both ISVs and customers to help prioritize their investments in the business processes and enterprise services that will deliver the most value to their industry. The new dilemma facing many CIOs will be how to justify the price of licensing and support of IVN applications against the lingering perceptions of their business users that SAP was going to address all of their business needs on a single integrated platform.

SOX pales in comparison to the plethora of state, federal, and international compliance regulations that govern the manufacturing, trading, transportation, handling, and disposal of chemicals. With the addition of the EU’s onerous REACH regulations to the complex EH&S compliance landscape, chemical companies are reevaluating their tangled webs of homegrown and point products for EH&S.
